Polymerization Catalyst

Petrosadid: Polymerization Catalyst

Polymerization is the process of connecting monomers together and creating large molecules with different sizes and shapes.

Catalyst plays a critical role, specially in the polymerization of polyolefin. This effect verifies that the shape and size of particles as well as the particle size distribution of the catalyst is directly reflected in the polymer.

The polymerization reaction occurs at the active sites that are distributed over the whole of catalytic particle, both on the surface and in the inside. Since particles have to fracture and expand in all directions, fracturing of the catalyst must be controlled and no uncontrolled fragment of catalyst particles must occur during this process.

Following scheme exhibits step growth and chain growth kinetics of polymerization. Lattice sites specified with a white color code exhibited the unreacted monomers while the red and blue colors exhibit the polymerized sites. Nucleation and growth are mechanism which are followed by chain growth polymerization.
